Every end of year, we reflect on it by remembering the hits of the year. From Missy Elliott to Chilla, here are the 13 songs that made 2017!

 

Missy Elliot – I’m Better

Last year she had released “WFT” and “Pep Rally”, her first singles since 2008. This year Missy Elliott offered us this third track, featuring Lamb. She also gathered three of her friends and iconic figures of hip hop on the official remix, Eve, Lil’ Kim, and Trina.

 

Chilla – Si j’étais un homme

If last year in France we only talked about Shay, 2017 was the year of Chilla. The girl from Lyon was discovered by the general public with this song, obviously inspired by Beyoncé and “If I Were A Boy”. Being very engaged, she brings up the problems of misogyny.  This track is on her first EP Karma, released last November. 

 

Stefflon Don – 16 Shots

Everybody wants a piece of Stefflon Don, the little gem from London. At the end of last year, she released the Real Ting mixtape after having released the video of the same name where we can see DJ Khaled. She started 2017 by releasing the video for “16 Shots”, also on the mixtape, starring her mum! A few months later, she worked with Jeremih, who was already on her mixtape, Demi Lovato and Drake, then she dropped “Hurting Me” featuring French Montana.

 

Kash Doll – For Everybody

The former stripper and new business woman is being discreet, but she is not one to forget. Kash Doll dropped her first mixtape, Keisha vs Kash Doll, last December. We can find Trina on it, and she is, among others, on Drake and Big Sean’s radar. Her absence is due to an argument with her label that took her music of the internet. She however released “For Everybody” in March to remind us why she is top of the list material. 

 

Mona Haydar – Hijabi (Wrap my Hijab)

Mona Haydar is the female rapper coming to break the cliché of the Muslim woman. She proves that you can be fun while wearing a hijab. She shares her passion for culture and the reality of the everyday life of a young religious woman in today’s world. In “Hijabi”, her first single, Mona Haydar denounces, among other things, the ignorance of the mystery around the hijab.

 

Snow Tha Product – Waste of Time

If you listened to her last project Half Way There… Part1, you know that even if she feels underrated, Snow Tha Product is determined to make her entrance on the mainstream scene. The Latina girl is getting closer, one video at a time. For instance, she released in April the song “Waste of Time”. Nicknamed “breakup anthem”, she explains to her ex why she’s better off without him.

 

Cardi B – Bodak Yellow

First she was a stripper, then a reality show star on Love & Hip Hop. Then she quit the show to focus on her music career. In January, she released the mixtape Gangsta Bitch Music Vol2, on which we can find “Lick”, featuring Offset. In June, “Bodak Yellow” was dropped and made its way to the top charts. In September, she became the first solo rap artist to make it to the general top Billboard Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill and in October, she said yes to Offset’s proposal. “Bodak Yellow” has since made it worldwide and represents the hustler’s power.

 

IAMDDB – Shade

Shade is kind of like IAMDDB’s “Bodak Yellow”. She had two mixtapes out when she shot her COLOR live. In August, the “Shade” video was released, followed by her third mixtape Hoodrich Vol3 in September. Not only it’s her third mixtape, but it’s her also her third mixtape within a year. “Shade” brought her a lot of attention and she took advantage of it by going on tour. She stopped by Paris, where she had two shows on the same night. And since she knows the power of her song, she performed it four times on the same evening.

 

Yaeji – Drink I’m Sipping On

Yaeji is a complete artist. She was born in New York, moved to South Korea when she was a kid and came back to the US to study art. She has a passion for visual arts, but she is also a rapper, producer and DJ. She made her entrance, last October, on the international scene with the single with half English half Korean lyrics “Drink I’m Sipping On”, from her EP ep2.

 

Cassie – Love A Looser

After a few years of silence to focus herself on cinema, Cassie came back with her first single since the Rockabyebaby mixtape in 2013. Featuring G-Eazy, she released “Love A Loser”, derived from the short film Cassie, that came out a week before, that links her career as a singer to her career as an actress. No album has been officially announced. 

 

Gorillaz – Garage Palace

She built a buzz in 2015 when she released her first album and in 2016 after announcing the following album. This year, the child prodigy of English rap is back at it again. After opening for Lauryn Hill’s tour, Gorillaz released Humanz, their first album in six years. The last single, “Garage Palace”, stars Little Simz and her machine gun flow! In the animated video, the American band and the English singer get together to defeat a Buddha in solid gold.

Remy Ma – Wake Me Up ft. Lil’ Kim

If there is one beef to remember in 2017, it is the one between Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj. With “Shether” last March, Remy Ma declared war to Nick Minaj, which turned into a cold war. Since her comeback on stage last year, she didn’t stop. After Plata O Plomo with Fat Joe, she teased Seven Winters & Six Summers, her first solo album since 2006. The single “Wake Me Up” featuring Lil’ Kim announces the color of the project and is a beautiful tribute to one rapper from another.
